1. Introduction

Artificial intelligence has progressed through several paradigmatic phases since its formal emergence in the mid-twentieth century. Symbolic approaches emphasized explicit representations and rule-based reasoning, while later statistical paradigms prioritized pattern extraction from data. Contemporary systems—especially those based on deep learning—have achieved striking results in perception, language modeling, and optimization under well-specified objectives. The term is frequently invoked in public debate, but its scientific meaning is often diluted by ambiguous usage or conflation with current machine learning systems.

2. Defining Artificial General Intelligence

AGI is commonly characterized as general-purpose machine intelligence: the capacity to learn, reason, and act effectively across diverse tasks without requiring task-specific redesign (Goertzel, 2014). Central to this definition is transferability—the ability to apply knowledge acquired in one context to problems in another.

Legg and Hutter (2007) describe intelligence as an agent’s ability to achieve goals across a wide range of environments. While abstract, this formulation highlights a crucial distinction between general and narrow intelligence: generality is measured not by peak performance but by adaptability under change.

3. Historical Origins of the AGI Concept

The conceptual origins of AGI can be traced to early computational theories of mind. Alan Turing’s question of whether machines could think framed intelligence in behavioral terms (Turing, 1950). The Dartmouth proposal later articulated optimism that human-level intelligence could be achieved through symbolic computation (McCarthy et al., 1955).

While narrow AI excels at interpolation within known distributions, it often lacks the ability to reason causally or explain its decisions—capabilities central to human intelligence (Lake et al., 2017). 6. Learning, Understanding, and Causality

A key distinction between narrow AI and general intelligence lies in causal reasoning. Modern machine learning excels at identifying correlations but often lacks explicit representations of cause and effect.

Causal models support explanation, intervention, and counterfactual reasoning—capabilities essential for robust generalization (Pearl, 2009; Pearl & Mackenzie, 2018). Without such models, AI systems remain brittle under shifting conditions.

7. Consciousness, Self-Awareness, and Conceptual Confusions

AGI is frequently conflated with consciousness or self-awareness. While related philosophically, these concepts are distinct. AGI concerns functional competence; consciousness concerns subjective experience.

Debates such as Searle’s Chinese Room challenge the inference from correct outputs to genuine understanding (Searle, 1980). Other perspectives emphasize functional explanations of cognition without invoking phenomenology (Dennett, 1991; Dehaene et al., 2017).

8. Societal and Economic Implications of AGI

Although AGI does not yet exist, its potential implications motivate careful analysis. General intelligence could alter labor markets and organizational structures, but outcomes would depend on governance and institutional context. In applied contexts, a generally intelligent system might assist human researchers in synthesizing complex information across disciplines. Such assistance should be understood as augmentation rather than replacement, embedded within human-governed processes.

10. Artificial General Intelligence and Its Relevance for Robotics

Robotics does not require AGI to deliver value, and AGI does not inherently require embodiment. Nevertheless, physical environments pose challenges—uncertainty, partial observability, real-time constraints—that highlight limits of narrow systems.

Embodied intelligence research emphasizes grounding, feedback, and adaptation (Pfeifer & Bongard, 2006). If AGI were realized, its relevance to robotics would lie in cognitive control rather than mechanical capability. 11. Current State of AGI Research

AGI research raises foundational questions about intelligence, knowledge, and measurement. Human cognition is shaped by embodiment, culture, and social interaction, complicating attempts at computational replication.

Whether AGI is achievable remains uncertain. Nonetheless, the pursuit of the concept clarifies the boundaries of narrow AI and deepens understanding of cognition itself.
